Aroah: El día después
El nuevo disco de Aroah, de cuyo diseño me he encargado, llega a las tiendas el próximo lunes 11 de junio de la mano de Acuarela Discos, pero hace varios días que salió de fábrica y, desde hace unas horas, ya tengo una copia en mis manos.
La primera idea que tuve fue la de preparar un diseño basado directamente en ilustraciones. Ya me lo avisó Irene, la voz detrás de Aroah: El día después se distancia en más de un sentido de los discos anteriores, con lo que siendo la fotografía la protagonista en la portada y el libreto de todos ellos, pensé que una buena manera de marcar la diferencia ya de entrada era la de abordar su diseño con ilustraciones. En cualquier caso, antes de comenzar a abocetar nada, me dediqué a escuchar compulsivamente (mi cuenta del Last.fm es testigo de ello) una copia previa a la masterización del disco, con la intención de entender bien lo que Irene quería transmitir con su nuevo trabajo.
Los diez cortes que componen El día después conforman el que seguramente es hasta la fecha el disco más comercial de Aroah, pero también el más sincero: por ello acabé abandonando la idea del disco ilustrado, cuyo resultado seguramente se habría alejado de lo que entendí que debía reflejar su diseño, y optando por usar fotografía pero de una forma diferente a tal y como se había usado hasta ahora en los discos de Aroah, con Irene como protagonista de la portada y el resto de las fotografías. Una de las primeras personas ajenas al proceso de realización del disco que vieron las primeras pruebas de portada, ya con las fotos que preparamos, la definieron como “una mezcla entre cantautora de los 70 y portada de un disco indie”. Ésa es precisamente la idea tras parte de la estética de El día después.
Los primeros bocetos que realicé (sobre estas líneas) son los que terminaron por delimitar lo que buscaba. El día después, la canción que da título al disco, habla de una ruptura y del viaje que se inicia tras ella con todo lo aprendido. Con la portada del disco, que también hace las funciones de portada del libreto, la intención era retratar el momento de la despedida para, tras un juego de plano/contraplano, abordar el viaje a lo largo de las diferentes fotografías que ilustran el libreto.
Antes de la sesión fotográfica preparé unos bocetos a modo de story-board (sobre estas líneas, haz clic sobre la imagen para ampliar) con los planos básicos que necesitaba para el diseño del disco. De las fotografías se encargó Jennifer Cox, a la que seguramente no he agradecido lo suficiente toda su entrega, disposición, buen hacer y aportaciones para lo que ha terminado por ser la imagen final del trabajo.
Para el packaging no hubo demasiadas discusiones: desde un primer momento estuve de acuerdo con Irene en servirnos de un digipack de dos bandejas, para guardar el libreto en una de ellas y seguir jugando con la fotografía en su interior.
A modo de anticipo, he colgado la canción que da título al trabajo y que terminó sirviendo como punto de partida para lo que ha terminado siendo su diseño.
